Human-Centric Leadership and the Circular Economy
In businesses that have employees, there are often 2 very conflicting views on how a team member should be treated by those in Leadership positions.
There is the old-school way of thinking that employees are just a commodity. A means to an end. A ‘tool’ that you use, abuse, and spit out, to get you the results your business needs. Someone easily expendable. A hire & fire once the job is done.
And there is the modern thinking that embodies human-centric leadership. An understanding that employees are people too, and need to be treated with respect, provided gratitude and recognition for their contributions, offered flexibility, empathy and understanding to their difficulties or short-comings, and provide a nurturing environment for them to grow and develop their strengths. Human-centric leadership is a new way of thinking, of valuing the employee as a whole, of creating a good working life for them, which in turn benefits the company. By treating employees this way, you inspire innovation, motivation and cooperation to work together to achieve business goals.
In the buzz of our daily grind, we often overlook how leadership styles can either make or break major initiatives, like transitioning to a Circular Economy. A circular economy is not just about recycling more or reducing waste; it’s about a fundamental shift in our values regarding how we live and work. And to drive this change, we need leaders who understand not just the economics or policies, but the human element also.
Companies like Tesla and nations like the Netherlands are already leading in this area, proving that it’s both practical and beneficial. However, what stands out in these successes are the leaders at the helm. They’re not just driven by innovation or profit; they’re driven by a sense of empathy, purpose, and optimism.
Empathy: These leaders are in tune with the needs of both people and the planet, pushing for solutions that are sustainable and humane.
Purpose: They’re not just in it for the short-term gains. They look at the bigger picture—a better world for everyone, not just a better balance sheet for one company.
Optimism: They approach challenges with a ‘can-do’ mindset. It’s not about avoiding hurdles but knowing that they can be overcome with a strong team supporting them.
So, as we hear more talk about moving to a Circular Economy, let’s not forget the role of leadership. Let’s foster leaders who not only understand circular principles but also embody these human-centric qualities that are needed in every workplace. Because to make this world a better place, we need leadership that starts with the heart.
