Learn, Unlearn, Relearn – What’s getting in your way?

Nurturing your human spirit through self-kindness and positive habits can lead to greater clarity and purpose in life.

As a Leadership and Executive Coach, as well as a registered Psychologist, I have come across many people in my 30 years of experience who were not where they wanted to be, whether that’s in their life, in their relationships or in their workplace. My thoughts often drift to the why…

Why are more and more people getting less clarity in life? I see this in 2 main areas:

  1. Less clarity around what their passions, desires and goals are; and
  2. Less clarity around how to nurture themselves (which I call “Nurturing the Human Spirit”)

From my experience, if you focus on the second point and really learn how to nurture your human spirit within, then the first point will open itself up to you.

So what does it take to nurture yourself? I have come to understand that many people are stuck in the draining effect of fear. They focus on all the things in their life that could cause a potential for loss, rather than focussing on the empowering effect of loving kindness to the self and to others. They seem to forget the rule that “what you focus on grows, what you think about expands, and what you dwell upon determines your destiny” (Robin Sharma – Leadership Expert, Humanitarian and Author). They have forgotten that their automatic self-talk (10x more thought processes are running in your head than what you verbalise) is so important in nurturing and positively reinforcing themselves. They are surrounding themselves with the wrong groups of people. They are not fuelling their bodies appropriately. They are not getting adequate rest. They are sedentary. They are lacking any significant rituals and grounding.

What can we do to rectify this? Start slow and steady. The Antidotes are energy shifts, gratitude, appreciation, and regular healthy rituals. Everyone can learn to nurture themselves. You just need to unlearn the unhealthy habits, and relearn the ones that will best support, empower and nurture you. Whether that’s finding time for meditation or gentle reflection, going for a walk in nature, breath work, light exercise, healthy food choices, journaling, carving time out of your day to be quiet, or just slowing down and really listening to what your body is telling you it needs. Once you have given your body permission to slow, then you can identify the rituals and habits that aren’t serving you. It is then time to unlearn these unhealthy habits, and relearn some productive and empowering rituals that you can complete every single day to help nurture your human spirit and achieve peak performance in your everyday life.

A famous futurologist, Alvin Toffler, once said:

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

Learning how to calm your mind, calm your body and shrink your worries is a very important tool for everyone, no matter what stage of your life journey you are at. It’s time to start nurturing your human spirit today!

By nurturing your human spirit, you can gain better clarity to help you determine the reason and purpose you do the things you do; what would touch, move and inspire you at the deepest level; what is your reason for being.
